Margo Minco wrote the story âThe Address.â It tells about the chaos that comes after a war. We can see what it does to people and how they act. You can feel the pain, grief, and mental torment that war survivors have to deal with. It tells the story of the author, a Jew who goes back to her home country after the war. She has already lost a lot, and then she loses her mother. Itâs also about how she deals with the world on her own after sheâs been through so much pain. We also learn about how cruel the world is to those who are powerless. When she is treated badly again, she learns a lesson the hard way. She realises that material things donât give her anything, so she gives up everything. So, it tells us about pain and how to grow as a person.
The Address starts out with a war victim going back to her home country. Itâs about a daughter who goes back to Holland to live with her family. She goes there after the war to look for her momâs things. When she gets back to her home country, no one is happy to see her. She goes to the address on her hand. Itâs the 46th house on Marconi Street. When the woman opens the door, she doesnât recognise the girl on it.
The author notices that the woman is wearing the green jumper that her mother knitted. So, she was even more sure that she was where she should be. But the woman did not say that she did not know her mother.
Even though the author didnât want to talk to her, the woman didnât give up and shut the door. When the author thinks about the past, she is going back in time. Her mother gave her the address years ago. When she gets back to her home after the war, she finds that a lot of things are gone. So, her mother gives her Mrs. Dorlingâs address. She finds out that her mother used to know Mrs. Dorling a long time ago. So, her mother gave Mrs. Dorling all of their valuable things to make sure they were safe. So, after a long time, the author thinks about going back to get their things. So, she goes back again after Mrs. Dorling told her to leave the first time. On her second visit, the door is answered by a fifteen-year-old.
We find out that the mum wasnât there. The writer told her how much she wanted to meet her mother. The girl lets her come in. The author is surprised to see that her motherâs things are all over the room. Even though the room was different, everything in it was very familiar. She started to feel so bad that she no longer wanted to have anything that belonged to her mother. So, she leaves the house, thinking that she might forget the address and never get those things back.
To sum up, The Address Summary shows us how complicated human emotions like trust, hope, and betrayal are. It also shows us how bad war is.
